Coach Jim Burcham trained, competed, instructed and hosted some of the largest tournaments in Florida for many years.  He and his son began as students at OFC in the 80’s, and it wasn’t long before Jim joined the other two coaches to bring the sport of fencing to the masses.

Around the turn of the decade, the other coaches left the club, leaving Jim with the decision to either take the lead as head coach or pass the club to another.  Fortunately for all of us, Jim held onto the reins and drove OFC into the 21st century!

Over the years, Jim threw some of the largest and well-known tournaments in the state.  OFC’s “Great Pumpkin Open” and “Fools of April” were two of the regularly scheduled annual events, and both featured awesome custom-made trophies.  Jim is also an accomplished sculptor and weldor.  The club also grew to become the largest in Central Florida … there was usually a wait to fence on the strips on busy nights.

In 2017, Jim retired from the sport and moved a bit north to Alabama. He passed the club wholly to Jennifer Seachrist, who began fencing with OFC in 1987 at the age of 10, and her husband, who also trained under Jim from 2001 to 2005.

Central Florida thanks Jim for all of his hard work and dedication to the sport of fencing.  So many good memories are shared by so many people thanks him and Orlando Fencing Club!
